FAQ
Common questions about how TongueTide tracks progress, handles test-outs, and keeps practice efficient.
Why didn't my confidence level jump to 100% after testing out of a domain?▼
Testing out marks every word and grammar skill in the territory as known, then confidence is recomputed from how strong those memories are. Until recently the "known" strength was treated as about 91% owned, so even a perfect test-out landed around 91% instead of 100%.
We now stamp a passed test-out as fully claimed, so you should see 100% confidence and the territory marked as complete. A partial pass still uses the recomputed percentage based on how many words you got right.
What does testing out actually do?▼
A test-out challenge samples words and grammar from a single life domain. If you pass, the whole domain's vocabulary and its grammar spine are marked as known, so Waves move on to fresh material. If you don't pass, the words you answered correctly are still banked everywhere they appear on the map.
Why do I keep seeing words I already know?▼
During a Wave you can tap "I know this" on any teach card to mark a word as already confident. Known words are removed from drills and no longer recycled as review. Spaced repetition only brings back words that are genuinely approaching the forgetting curve.
How is this different from a streak-based app?▼
TongueTide is organised around fifteen life domains, not a linear ladder. Each domain is weighted by how much it changes your daily life. Progress is measured by confidence in real situations — ordering food, handling a problem, telling a story — not by how many days in a row you opened the app.
What are credits for?▼
AI-generated activities — voice tutoring, new stories, and some Waves — cost backend AI credits. You get free starter credits when you join, and you can buy more in packs. We also keep a rotating set of free lessons, stories, and games that don't require any credits.
Can I switch languages?▼
Yes. Use the language picker in the app header to switch at any time. Each language has its own map, progress, and placement level, so switching doesn't erase your work in another language.
Do I need to type accents or punctuation?▼
No. Written and spoken answers are graded on meaning and spelling, not punctuation or accent marks. We compare against a set of acceptable answers so small typos or informal replies usually still count.
